The World Celebrates International Literacy Day: This Year’s Theme – “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces”

by Shahnawaz Alam

Today marks international literacy day. The purpose of this day is to make people understand the value and importance of education. The day is meant to affect the global population both at the individual and the societal level.

There is a different theme for this year’s Literacy Day. The theme of this is “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.” This day calls for understanding the importance of literacy and the fundamental principles of education.

On the 14th session (October 26, 1966) of UNESCO, they declared to celebrate International Literacy Day on September 8. The celebration happened for the first time in 1967.

There have been several attempts and trials to increase the global level of literacy. But there is still a massive number of people ( 771 million), including young people and adults, without the idea of minimum literacy.

But, the global effort to increase literacy is not decreasing. In 2022, we have a theme for this day called “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces.” The main focus of this theme is building the importance of the learning spaces as a place that builds resilience to ensure that everyone gets fair, good quality, and inclusive education.
