Yep Or Yup: The Correct Use Of The Terms

by subhasree nag

Whenever we are talking to someone, we often use the terms yep or yup to acknowledge something, or simply to confirm to something we have been told, or to just say yes. We often say miss you instead of saying I miss you, or just love you instead of saying I love you. This is similar to those cases. Yep, and yup, just have one letter that does not match. But do their meanings change because of that?

Today, in this article, we are going to discuss the difference between these words so that you can decide for yourself which one you want to use; yup or yep. Read the article to find out the difference between the two and what you should be using in your daily conversation.

Which Is Correct: Yep Or Yup?

There are a lot of similar words in the English language which are used in different scenarios. For example, grateful and greatful. Now the question arises whether there is an actual difference between yep and yup.

Which is correct- yep or yup

The short answer to this question is that both these words are adverbs and possess the same meaning. Both yup and yep are informal ways of saying yes, and can also be interchanged in most situations and contexts.

These two words should only be used while having an informal conversation or answering someone casually. These are not appropriate for use in any formal contexts or research papers. But these two words carry different feel and tone to them.

When Can You Use Yep?

‘Yep’ is considered a more respectful and polite way of saying yes. It has a more agreeable one to it. Yep implies that the speaker is taking into account the other person’s opinion. It suggests that the other person is not just responding positively but is also considering what the other person has to say about the matter. But again, this is not fit to use in any informal situations.

I guess it is clear by now that both the terms have similar meanings but have a slightly different tone to them. But it is also evident that these terms cannot be used in any formal setting, business meeting, or any professional email.

But the question is which one is more popular. Google’s NGram is saying that yep is a lot more popular than yup. It was back in the 1990s when people started using “yep” in casual conversation.

Which One Is More Formal? Yup Or Yep?

Yep or yup, none of these are formal terms and cannot be used in professional scenarios. Just like the words auntie or aunty are informal terms of the word aunt, yep and yup are informal ways of saying yes. You can use these in any casual conversations with your friends and family or while writing to family members, but these should never be used in an essay, job interviews, or presentations.
