Practice Or Practise: Are Both Spellings Correct?

by subhasree nag

Practice makes a man perfect. Or is it ‘practise?’ This has been confusing people for quite a long time now. Is it practice or practise? Let’s end this confusion once and for all.

Practice and practise are two different spellings of the same verb meaning ‘training by repetition’ or ‘engage in something professionally.’ The difference depends on which writing style you are following: British or American.

Practice Or Practise: What Is The Difference?

Practice Or Practise_ What Is The Difference_

Practise with an ‘s’ and practice with a ‘c’ are often confused, like other pairs of words in the English language, ‘advice or advise.’ One of the major differences lies in the different English writing styles.

However, the other difference between the words is their context and usage. Practice is mostly used as a noun, and practise is mostly used as a verb.

There are various concepts in grammar that are tricky because of the different rules. Moreover, the vocabulary is vast, and this can easily overwhelm new learners.

Practise Practice
Usage (This is in reference to British English) This is used as a verb. This is used as a noun.
Meaning 1. To practice something to improve a skill. 2. To make a habit of doing something. 1. Using a method or idea. 2. A customary tradition or procedure. 3. A repetitive exercise to improve a skill.

This explanation is only applicable to British English. However, in American English, they use ‘practice’ for both the verb and the noun.
